"Banana Split Vowels" is a fun literacy center to help children practice isolating and identifying medial vowels in CVC words, in addition to learning how to segment and blend sounds in CVC words. This fun ice cream-themed center is a great phonemic awareness and phonics activity for your students as summertime is approaching! This product includes 16 banana splits with CVC words, a recording sheet, and a self-check resource also.

First, students can lay out the banana split dishes with the initial and final consonants already completed. They should identify the picture on the dish (making sure the word for it matches the beginning and ending sounds), and then segment the word to isolate the medial vowel. They can then choose a vowel ice cream scoop to complete each word!

Students can record their answers on the included recording sheet. We have included both a color and bw version for you to choose from.

Finally, students can use the self-check resource to see if they spelled each word correctly. If they had mistakes, this is the perfect time to talk about the short vowel sounds and identify which children need additional practice with medial vowels in CVC words.

If you love ice cream-themed activities, you might want to check out these other products

We LOVE to learn about ocean animals of all kinds, especially whales!! This is such a high-interest theme and the children are always so engaged and excited to learn about these giants of the ocean!

We start by gathering information about what the children already know about whales by filling out a KWL chart. We also recorded any questions they had about whales.
The main character, Emily, thinks she has a whale in her pond. She writes a letter to her teacher, Mr. Blueberry, to tell him all about this exciting news. Mr. Blueberry writes her back and assures here that she does not have a whale in her pond because they need to live in salt water. The letters continue between Emily and Mr. Blueberry and as a result Emily (and our children too) learned a lot about whales.

After reading, we like to check for comprehension so the children answer questions about the book. They LOVE these questions so much, they cheer for them! There are 10 multiple choice questions related to the story.

Children also work in cooperative groups to complete a sentence sorting activity. Children will read the sentences and determine if it is something that is true about whales or not based on what they learned from the book. They sort the sentences by fantasy or reality.

Children then complete a journal independently. Each child wrote one sentence that tells something that is fantasy about whales and one sentence that tells something that is reality.

Included in this pack is a math lesson for your students to practice addition and subtraction with number stories. Children will read the number story and use the ocean animal manipulatives to help solve the problem. They will also use the numbers and symbols included to build a matching equation.

We have also included an assessment for your students to complete after the lesson.

Also included is "What's on a Whale?" This is used for children to label the parts of a whale using vocabulary words that are included in a word bank.

While teaching about whales we like to complete a whale book. This whale book serves as a mini fact book for the children to create and keep. We learn facts about whales in general as well as concentrate on four types of whales. This book includes facts about killer whales, humpback whales, blue whales, and beluga whales. We also have a PowerPoint that we have put together to help in teaching these facts.  You can find it here in our store.

This book contains five pages that the children complete through writing, drawing, cutting, and gluing.

We have had a great time learning about whales in our classes and we hope your children will too!

Roll and Color by Sum
Children roll two dice and color the part of the picture with the correct sum. They love these! Easy to differentiate with dotted dice, numeral dice, or one of each!

Color by Sums and Differences
Children look at the color key, solve the equations, and then color each part of the picture the correct color based on the answer to each equation.

Place Value Plunge
Children draw a card from the deck, count the cubes using hundreds, tens, and ones with base ten block pictures, and then write that number on the hundreds chart. Lots of brainwork going on here and they loved it! We have a differentiated version with a completed hundreds chart in the pack also.

Below this child is filling in the numeral 20, which she has found the correct spot for. As you can see, she had some difficulty with placement of some of the other numbers on the 100s chart, but this was the perfect opportunity to do some review and help this small group of children.

Addition in the Ocean & Subtraction in the Sea
Children spin two numbers, add or subtract, and record the equations and answers on the recording sheet.

The children loved this activity so much! Who doesn't love to spin the spinners around?
The build-a-bears even joined in on the fun!

Double Ten Frame Addition and Subtraction
Children use counters on the addition cards or cross objects out on the subtraction cards. Then, they can record the sum or difference on each card.

Crabby Vowels
Children segment the sound in each word and then pop the bubbles of the incorrect vowel sounds. We have three sets of this center in our pack: CVC words, CVCe words, and words with vowel teams.

Ocean Observer
Children choose a high-frequency word from the pile and try to read it. If they know the sight word, they can place in on the ocean animal word that is on the picture. If not, the card is discarded. The object is to fill all ten ocean animals and read as many high-frequency words as possible!

Ocean Syllable Clippies
Children clip each ocean picture that has the correct number of syllables shown on each card.

Ocean I-Spy
Children use a magnifying glass to locate all of the words hidden in the ocean scene, read them, and then write them on the recording sheet. They love figuring out what the words say and seeing if they can find them all to fill up the recording sheet!

Write the Room
Children search around our classrooms to find one word to record that begins with each letter of the word on their sheet.

Sorting Equations in the Sea
Children will read and sort equations by their sum or difference. This is a great math center that can be differentiated easily based on classroom need and/or the needs of individual students, as addition and subtraction equations (up to 10) are included in this pack.

There are also additional activities/materials in this bundle that are not pictured. They include:
Ocean Animals Photos and Labels
Ocean-Themed "I Have, Who Has?"

We hope your children have "Oceans of Fun" with this literacy and math bundle!
Thanks for stopping by!

This center pack is full of activities for your classroom. We love the activities included in this pack and we know you will too! Come and take a look at what is included:

Name That Insect
This is a fun center in which children identify the insects in the photographs and then match the insect name. We use small chart stands and pocket charts from Lakeshore to display this center.

I Have, Who Has?
These I Have, Who Has games have become a favorite among our classes. This one added some buggy fun to our day! Children will read insect names as well as identify insects by their pictures in this fast paced game. They will need to listen to their peers carefully so they know when it is their turn! The more times you play the game, the faster they get!

Scrambled Sentences
Children will order sentence fragments to build a complete sentence that matches the illustrations. We have included two versions of this activity to meet the needs of your students.

I Spy Word Search
Children love to use the magnifying glass to find the insect themed words in the colorful scene. When the find a word, they will read it, and then write it on the recording sheet provided.

Write the Room
In this fun center, children walk around the room looking for words that begin with each letter of an insect themed word. Words included in this pack are: grasshopper, ladybugs, and dragonfly.

Ladybug Place Value Game
This game is a great way to practice place value by counting base ten blocks. Each player gets a game board. The game board is a ladybug with different numbers in her spots. Children will take turns pulling a card from a set of cards that are face down in a pile. After pulling a card, the child will determine the number by counting the tens and ones. If they have the number on their ladybug, they should cover it up with a black counter. The first one to cover all the spots is the winner!

Addition/Subtraction Clippies
This is another favorite among our children. We use small clothespins for this center. Children read the number on the card and then read each equation. If the sum or difference of the equation equals the number on the card, the children should place a clothespin on it.

Collecting Critters (Addition/Subtraction Game)
In this game, children will solve addition and subtraction number sentences to collect all the insects in their jar. To play the game, children pull a card from the deck and solve the equation. The sum or difference determines the number of spaces to move on the game board. When they land on an insect they can either cross it out with a dry erase marker or cover it with a counter. They have now collected that insect. The game continues until one player has collected all five insects.

Thanks for visiting! We hope you enjoy this center pack!
